One body, two lenses, no bag

What I actually carry, what I stopped carrying, and why the bag was making the work worse.

The kit list is short and it got there by subtraction. Every item removed made the work slightly better, which is not what I expected and took an embarrassingly long time to accept.

What comes out

  • One body. A 50 on it.
  • An 18–55 in a jacket pocket, for when 50 is too tight.
  • A spare battery and one card. Not four cards.
  • Nothing else. No bag.

Why no bag

A bag means a decision. Standing on a corner working out which lens the moment deserves is the reliable way to miss it. It also makes you look like someone who has come to photograph, which changes a street before you have taken a frame.

Every lens in the bag is a decision you make instead of a photograph you take.

The cost

There are frames I cannot get. Anything needing reach is gone. Anything needing a tripod is gone. Low light past a point is gone, unless the flash is on.

The trade is that I shoot more. Far more. And the work is made of the frames I got, not the ones the kit theoretically allowed.
